In an article from The Wall Street Journal, Get in Line: Backlog for Big Rigs Stretches to 2019, you can read more about why with freight demand red-hot, truck manufacturers expect to break records for orders this year, and deliveries will reach deep into next year.
We’ve covered the tight freight market before, and you can see our previous blog about how new Department of Transportation Electronic Logging requirements have reduced the number of hours drivers can work, and why this new policy resulted in a wave of driver retirements without new drivers to replace them. In short, with a smaller driver workforce and less hours on the road for active drivers, many orders are going undelivered due to the lack of driver availability.
While the article states that record numbers of trucks are being ordered, they are months and years away from being delivered to drivers and fleets. From the article:
“There’s basically a shortage of trucks right now because of supply-chain issues… Manufacturers can’t build trucks fast enough because their suppliers can’t keep up.”
