The Pacific Northwest has experienced drought the past few years. During the next five years you will see an increase in information regarding the “western states’ water crisis” (states from about Kansas through Texas and west). The Ogallala and other aquifers are becoming depleted, depriving water to downstream states such as Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, while Texas is experiencing its third year of drought conditions through lack of rain. Further west, the Colorado River has more demand for its water than supply and here in the Pacific Northwest, water is being diverted from agriculture to maintain endangered fish on the Snake and Columbia Rivers to name just two.
Over the coming years water is going to surpass oil as the largest headline grabbing natural resource on our planet for one very good reason; there are substitutes for oil, there is no substitute for water. Water is one of the basic ingredients for life.
Let me tell you the role United Pipe plays in water conservation:
Every year Americans take 25% of the clean water from its rivers, streams, lakes and grown water for its use. Of that 25% a full 79.6% is used for agriculture, 4.3% is used for drinking water and other domestic uses, 2.9% is used on landscape and 1.5% is used on golf courses. Said another way, of all the water consumed in America, United Pipe sells product and services that can assist in the conservation of 88.3% of the water that is consumed each year.
In agriculture, 60% of the water is used for inefficient flood irrigation (even the Columbia River’s water is used 60% for flood irrigation). By changing from flood to pressure irrigation we can easily conserve 30-40% of this water. On the domestic front, we sell pressure pipe and control valves ensuring the water that is put into our distribution systems for our use, stays in our system and is properly controlled. Additionally we sell water meters that assist in the conservation of water by ensuring that the person who uses the water is charged for that use. In landscape and golf we sell control systems that reduce water runoff, minimizing the application rate of the water while maximizing the growth and health of the plant product.
Please understand that United Pipe & Supply strongly supports and works hard for water conservation.
